Give a hand to the homeless, help the less fortunate.
In May of 2020, 59,308 people were homeless in NYC. This included 13,523 families and 20,044 homeless children.

Homelessness is at its highest levels since the Great Depression.

The number of homeless New Yorkers sleeping in municipal shelters every night is 61 percent higher than it was in 2010, and the number of homeless single adults is 133 percent higher.

Studies have shown that a majority of the homeless in New York suffer from mental illnesses and other severe health problems.

In fact, the most common reasons for homelessness are mental illness, substance abuse, untreated medical issues, traumatic events, violence and abuse, lack of affordable housing, and difficulty finding employment. Blacks and Hispanics are disproportionately affected by homelessness, with the South Bronx and East Harlem neighborhoods suffering from concentrated poverty.

About me

My name is Jamie and I am a rising junior going to school in Manhattan. During my hour long commutes, I've witnessed many times in the subways and on the streets homeless people asking for food and coins. Knowing that homelessness rates were high here, I did some research, found some stats, and compiled a list of actions that any New Yorker can take upon themselves to do to help the homeless out.
